Robin of Sherwood Malmesbury location title

Used in episodes:
The Swords of Wayland
Robin of Sherwood - Malmesbury Cloisters

The Abbey at Malmesbury sits high over the town. Although it was only used in one episode, it heralds the most ornate doorway we've ever seen. A must see.

Yes, the doorway. A magnificent specimen, he said, going all scientific. The doorway, as keen fans will recognise was used in The Swords of Wayland as the main entrance for Ravenscar Abbey. Watching the show back again, you'll see it a couple of times: when Morgwyn of Ravenscar escorts the Sheriff to his horse and Verdilais greeting the coven members into the Abbey for the 'coming of Lucifer'.

Go on inside for the next scene in the show and you'll recall the sword carrying ceremony. The ornate facade at the rear of the Abbey was constructed for the show and is not there now, taking it back to how it would have looked in the 12th Century. The ceiling is really breathtaking, so don't forget to look up! There is a little room at the top to the right where, legend has it, sick nuns could attend mass without infecting others. That was also used in the show when a couple of 'evil nun' followers sat up there.

The exterior to Ravenscar Abbey was filmed at St Michaels Mount in Marazion (Cornwall) and the interior (except the crypt) was filmed here, so you can appreciate the travelling about. The crypt, in the show, was as we found out built on a sound stage in Bristol studios due to the contraversy of finding a real crypt for raising the devil. However, this is still a beautiful Abbey and is well worth a visit.
