Used in episodes:
- Swords of Wayland
- The Inheritance
- Time of the Wolf
We found ourselves in the town of Caldicot, heading down the winding trackway in the Country Park and viewing the frontage of this lovely castle used for many scenes in Robin if Sherwood.
The familiar view of the drawbridge and entrance greeted us first, used as Grimstone Abbey in The Time of the Wolf. To the left of the bridge is the grassy area used by the monks in the episode as they tended their vegetable garden, and subsequently, where the Sons of Fenris attacked!
"..fans will recall Ray Winstone scaling the wall on Caerleon Castle, the very wall that is to the left of the gatehouse.."
The next memorable scene is from the end of the first TOTW episode, the Merries lined up by the drawbridge in the dry moat, trying to entice the Sons of Fenris out. It can be a difficult step to get into the moat depending on the level of nettles (don't wear shorts!!!).Leaving the episodes of Time of the Wolf, brings us to The Inheritance. In this episode, fans will recall Ray Winstone scaling the wall on Caerleon Castle, the very wall that is to the left of the gatehouse at Caldicot before you get to the round tower on the corner. The rest of the internals to Caerleon Castle were filmed mainly at Chepstow Castle.
The entrance was again used in The Swords of Wayland for Gwydian Castle. It seems so simple to just drop a few flags over the windows in the episode and make it another location in the show.
"The entrance was again used in The Swords of Wayland for Gwydian Castle."
Even though we'd seen all there was to see from a Robin of Sherwood perspective, we headed inside anyway and had a walk around the grounds. It is still a fantastic castle, with many of the rooms in the towers intact. The canon, in the centre of the courtyard is of special historic interest, being from Lord Nelsons ship.
