North of Newcastle-Upon-Tyne, our travels took us to the wonderfully historic castle of Alnwick
Walking down the main drive from the ticket office, you're greated with the awesome sight of Alnwick Castle itself, spreading out to your right as you approach the main gatehouse. The grandeur of this stone construction is evident.
"..it's easy to see why they started here for Robin Hood and the Sorcerer."
The stretch between the gatehouse and the inner courtyard was the next scene for us, memorable by Robert Addie on horseback in full battle armour, escorting Marion to Kirklees and receiving his instructions from the Sheriff and Abbott Hugo. The inner courtyard loomed at us as we walked in, remembering how the production crew had dressed the scene with soldiers and the alarm bell platform. We left the inner courtyard, that was also used in The Witch of Elsden for that brief moment that Robin rode in to rescue Jeanette's husband, and made our way around the castle to the outer bailey at the back for the wonderful scene of the Silver Arrow Competition.
Armed with our list of scenes filmed here we were at odds to discover that the dungeon set, where viewers were introduced to Will Scarlett for the first time, was not filmed here. That was, believe it or not, a set at Bristol studios. We left Alnwick Castle for our next location.
